Elliston was once known as Bird Island Cove and with good reason. It is home to numerous seabirds and also the Atlantic Puffin. The puffin is also the official bird of Newfoundland and Labrador since 1992. The Atlantic Puffin is one of four puffin species and the only one that lives on the North Atlantic Ocean.

Although you can sometimes spot puffins all over the Newfoundland shoreline, the Elliston lookout is the most consistent spot to see puffins without leaving dry land. Roughly 300 pairs of puffins nest there, although the area looks even more crowded because a few other species are found there, too.

The Atlantic Puffin is the smallest of the 4, weighing about the same as a can of pop (soda), and measuring around 25cm in length. There is no denying how unique Puffins are in their appearance, especially in comparison to other North American birds. This unique look has gained them the nicknames "sea parrots" or even "clowns of the sea".
