Introduced to the public at the Paris Motor Show in September 1969, the 304 was a success for Peugeot and was noted for several advanced features under its Pininfarina styled exterior.

Peugeot revealed the new 304 in 1969, based on the 204 platform but with larger engines and 504-inspired front and rear styling. The 204 stayed on as a more humble cut-price saloon and estate, but coupé and cabriolet were updated to 304 spec from 1970. At this point the 304 Cabriolet was officially imported into the UK with right-hand drive.

The 304 saloon, whether S or not, now featured a floor gear change like the coupé and cabriolet. That shifter was actually less precise and well-sorted than the column change that the 204/304 had been engineered with from the start, but the times were a-changing and Peugeot were way behind on that particular score.
